SPRING GROUP PROGRAM SPECTACULAR
Spring Break and Summer Camps at Sunburst are here!
Spring is almost upon us and with it comes the flowering of that most special perennial, the summer camp announcement. Each of our camps is a week of music, art, performance, games and other activities around a central musical theme.
Our camps run M-F from 9am-3pm each day with an extended day on Friday for our end of camp concert from 3-4pm, which friends and families are invited and encouraged to attend. Different camps are appropriate for different ages, instruments and experience levels as detailed below. OK, without further adieu, here are our 2017 Spring Break and Summer Camps:
Queens of Pop: Knowles, Gaga and Swift–The Trifecta
Our “Queens of Pop” spring break camp focuses on the three women who dominated the pop music scene over the last ten years--Beyonce, Lady Gaga, and Taylor Swift. Students can plan for a week of pop-themed fun and music centered around the success of these queens. The camp will conclude with an epic concert on stage at The Super Bowl Sunburst. The question is: Who is the ultimate Ruler of Pop?
Dates: April 10-14 (Pittsburgh Public Schools Spring Break)
What’s the gist of it? A pop driven music performance camp where kids will learn and perform music by three of the biggest stars in the world.
What ages can attend? 7-15
Is this camp right for me? This camp is for girls and boys who have at least a few months experience playing either guitar, piano, drums, bass, uke or singing AND who are ready to pop off with some seriously fun and vibrant music.
Night at the Hip-Rock Opera: Vol II
Our Rock Opera camp is all about student creativity and the composition of an entire concept album. Following in the footsteps of the musical “Hamilton,” our rockstar campers will create and perform a completely original concept album that incorporates elements of rock, hip-hop, and many other genres. The week will culminate with a live performance of our creation for friends and family!
Dates: June 19-23rd (First full week off for Pittsburgh Public)
What’s the gist of it? A whirlwind, weeklong project camp where kids write and perform a hip hop/rock opera from scratch!
What ages can attend? We will be running separate groups for kids 7-15
Is this camp right for me? The multimedia nature of this camp makes it appropriate for anyone interested in music, drama, art, lighting regardless of prior musical instrument experience.
Warped Summer: Punk Rock Extravaganza
Sunburst is celebrating the legendary Warped Tour, so get ready for a punk rock summer boot camp. We’ll be learning classic hits from past Warped Tour alums, writing our own angsty gems and analyzing some punk rock history. This will all be leading up to our final DIY outdoor performance. Know four chords? . . .you’re in the band!
Dates: June 26-30th
What’s the gist of it? Punk-rock-summer-tour-band-performance camp! In addition to learning and writing new songs, students will learn how to book a tour, print t-shirts, and perform for screaming fans.
What ages can attend? 10-17
Is this camp right for me? This camp is for kids 10+ who have at least a few months experience playing either guitar, piano, drums, bass, uke or singing.
Camp Studio: Let's Make an Album!
In Camp Studio kids will work as a team to create an album in a week! Working as engineers, musicians and producers, campers will learn every part of the production chain from writing and arranging songs to mixing an album and creating videos and album art. We’ll finish by sharing some of our tracks for a live audience in our end of week listening party and performance.
Dates: August 7-11th
What’s the gist of it? Write songs, record them, make an album, learn new skills!
What ages can attend? 10-17
Is this camp right for me? This camp is for kids 10+ of any experience level who have an interest in songwriting, recording or music production

Thanks to everyone who submitted an entry in our bass drum design contest. We’ve finally finished going through the stacks and stacks of entries and have decided on a winner. Performance Night March 25th
Hey Sunburst Students, looking for another chance to perform what you’ve been working on in your lessons? With the next full recital concert not until late May or early June we’ve decided to have a bonus event we’re calling “performance night”, you can think of it as a midterm recital if you like.
Performance night will be held Saturday March 25th in two sessions: 5-7pm and 7-9pm. Any and all students are encouraged to perform a song of their choice. Talk to your instructor about performing and sign up by replying here or talking to us at the desk next time you’re in.
